Asia Bibi appeal complainant not even present at time of her alleged ‘blasphemy’

Who is Asia Bibi?

The Christian woman Aasiya Noreen, commonly known as Asia Bibi, was condemned to death by a trial court in November 2010 for allegedly speaking three blasphemous statements against Islam and its prophet. The Lahore High Court upheld the decision of the trial court in October 2014. A three-member Supreme Court justice bench started hearing the case in October 2016, but after one hearing one of the justices excused himself from the trial and the hearing was postponed indefinitely. Then in April this year, Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar promised to pick up Asia Bibi’s case “soon”, and the case finally resumed six months later.Asia Bibi’s appeal hearing on 8 October took place before a three-member bench – Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and Justice Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel – who calmly heard arguments from both sides and raised several probing questions to ascertain the truth.  First, Saif-ul-Malook, the counsel for Asia Bibi, presented his arguments that there was insufficient evidence and the case was filed out of malice.
