Hormonal contraceptives and children leukaemia

Contraceptive pills and leukemia

Children whose mothers use hormonal contraceptives are more likely to develop leukaemia

The common denominator between the pill, patch and vaginal ring is that they all contain synthetic hormones that block ovulation. For the first time, the study published by The Lancet Oncology highlights "the potential link between maternal hormonal contraception and an increased risk of acute myeloblastic leukaemia in children. "

Researchers followed up 1,185,157 Danish children born between 1996 and 2014. 606 of them presented with leukaemia. These were classified according to maternal hormonal contraceptive use: "no use" for those who had not used this form of contraception before pregnancy, "previous use" for those who had stopped using it more than three months before pregnancy and "recent use" for those who had used it up to or during pregnancy.
