Dear friends,

My name is Emanuele Fusi, I am the President of the Novae Terrae Foundation and I hope that this notice will not disturb you during your activities.

It is the first time that I write directly to you and so I wish to personally thank you one by one for the solidarity shown in supporting our initiative to rebuild the Cathedral in Aleppo destroyed by ISIS bombing. It’s important not only the economic support, but also all the messages of encouragement that pleased us and above all gave meaning to our work.

The results achieved and the chain of solidarity born thanks to this project, convinced us to continue along this path. It means bringing a tangible aid to whom are persecuted for their faith and ideas around the world. As Pope Francis reminded us, the number of martyrs today exceeds the number of martyrs during the first centuries of Christianity. He said that people who have the good fortune to live in democratic countries have the important duty to not forget those who live in terror and violence and every day suffer serious limitations of their freedom.

We want to bring our concrete help to the suffering populations and be the intermediary of all people who would like to do something for them but do not have the tools to do it. Our concern is not only for the Syrian people, but for all those people who live in similar situations and almost nobody talks about.

We remember the massacres of Christians in the Philippines, the tensions and the continuous abductions in Nigeria, the difficult situation in Venezuela and Sudan, and the list could go on.

For this reason and with this goal, Fondazione Novae Terrae has decided to open some offices in the countries most at risk. We would like to monitor the evolution of the different situations directly, without the media intervention and so to inform you of the facts. In this way we will be able to find together with you the way to make yourself really useful.

We decided to start this project from Venezuela and Cuba, as they are among the poorest countries in Latin America and on the brink of radical historical changes. These are countries where the poverty of the people has reached unbelievable levels. Violence and limitation of liberties are caused by weapons, but are also the consequence of people that have been reduced to absolute poverty.

Venezuela is a striking example of this situation. It could potentially be one of the richest countries in the world, among the main producers of oil and raw materials on the planet including minerals essential to the high-tech industry. Until a few years ago it was considered the Eden of Latin America and its currency was consider a safe-haven. Now it is the Hell; people literally die of hunger and the world is indifferent. In April inflation reached 14,000% on an annual basis and it is estimated that it could reach 100,000 points by December. The average salary of a worker is less than five dollars a month, one kilo of rice costs half of the monthly salary and basic necessities, including medicines, have almost completely disappeared. Caracas is considered today the most dangerous city in the world and the situation, now out of control, favors drug traffickers from all over South America. They use undisturbed the Venezuelan route and its many maritime ports for drug trafficking.

Why all this? What are the repercussions on family life? What were the dynamics that had caused the disaster? Is a civil war the only way out? Why does this reality go almost unnoticed in the eyes of world public opinion? Are we sure that the reason of all this lies in the left party government? What can we do to make ourselves useful?

We will be permanently present in the country from the beginning of June also to try to give an answer to these questions.
In these days we are reaching arrangements to open other offices in Nigeria, Sudan and the Philippines, where we believe we can give an important contribution.

We will periodically inform you about the developments of our initiative of internationalization and proximity to crisis situations both by email and on our website and Facebook page.
I would also like to inform you that the Foundation will soon be open to volunteers.

So anyone who wants to actively collaborate in the development of our projects, dedicating time to the initiatives that he considers most deserving, can do it even remotely.

We need everyone!

We will soon be back to talk about this new opportunity to make ourselves useful by illustrating the operative methods.

I am absolutely certain that I can count on your fundamental help to support this new course of our Foundation.

Thank you for the time dedicated to me and I assure you that I will personally read any comments you will have the kindness to send us on these issues.

Emanuele Fusi
